Description

Lawyers for Human Rights (LHR), partnering with Ethiopian Lawyers Association (ELA) had put together a webinar under the title: “Promoting Access to Justice”. The event was organized with the support of the Civil Society Resource Center (CSRC). The webinar was moderated by Yeneneh Mulatu and It brought distinguished panellists the likes of H.E. Fuad Kiyar Ahmed, Molalign Melese, and Seble Assefa to share their insights.

The event aimed at creating a discussion platform on the topic of access to justice in this pandemic time. The COVID-19 crisis is causing insurmountable harm around the globe in every aspect, be it an economic, social and political crisis. To respond to the pandemic, governments have been taking several emergency measures among which restrictions on fundamental rights and freedoms are more common. In the context of Ethiopia, courts have partially ceased their operation since the restrictive measures were taken in late March. While this measure was taken to reduce the spread of the coronavirus, some concerns are raising regarding the proportionality of such measures on the one hand and the right of access to justice issues on the other. This is of special concern to the right of persons held in custody while pending trial. It is also a concern to the community in general who want to see a functional judiciary to guarantee justice when that is in need. It was, therefore, important to discuss the issue with relevant stakeholders.
