Lawyers for Human Rights (LHR) is thrilled to announce that the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights granted us Observer Status during its 79th Ordinary Session held in Banjul, Gambia. This status will significantly boost our role in the promotion and protection of human rights both locally and beyond. In particular, it will enable LHR to draw the attention of the Commission to violations of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, bring communications on behalf of individuals mainly through strategic human rights litigation, and monitor Ethiopia’s compliance with the Charter. The status will also enable LHR to take part in the Commission’s public sessions and engage with the reporting procedures by submitting shadow reports and popularizing concluding observations.
LHR is committed to upholding the responsibilities that come with this status and will diligently work to meet the expectations set by the Commission. We will continue to strive towards our objective of advancing human rights and ensuring justice for all.
